First impression for Web Bin Directory – “General web directory with “simplicity” as its motto or principle of operation”. You can immediately from looking at it say “oh just another directory what’s so special”, first of all if you did not notice it yet, look at the urls for various categories. That’s no normal, off the market script, and is made clear by Marty in the interview where he mentioned “The Web Bin, is written in Perl and I would like to think it fairly unique from the norm.” Before I forget, when asked “What about SEO and SERPs? Do you believe in that and as a directory owner do you believe it’s a requirement for any directory?
Marty replied, “Unsure about that, but basically my look on that is that, yeah meaningful URL do look nice but who looks at URL after you enter a page.” My reply to Marty would be, today in the world of competition, you need to rank well on google and bots and spiders do actually care about the url’s and they look at them. Humans usually do not visit directories much these days just to search for a site.
Let’s get back to discussing web-bin. Overall the display of links, their details, thumbnails are decent. Only thing that struck me and confused me was the process of adding a site to the directory. If you hit the Add Url link, you are greeted with a page with various links on the navigation left menu. Overview,Bid Manager,Listing Manager,Money Manager
Keywords Manager,Reports Manager,Suggestion Tool,Own Listing. Not sure what these all meant, for example “Bid Manager” what is all that about, as I see no bidding taking place at web-bin. So, I tried finding help on the site, and was shocked to see very limited help or faq section. I was expecting more as to how site operates and what benefits you get from registering an account other than adding your site. It mentions only about how to perform search. On the about us page it’s mentioned “unlimited languages” , not sure how that works as I could not find any language switching feature.Unless its automatic and detects your language from your location. Which I am afraid only Martin can elaborate. Other than above few things I liked the directory as its user friendly and not too many annoying ads as you see on various directories. It can use lots links as I found quite few categories that were just blank. One more thing Marty that image beside the Kids and Teens looks like an evil grin.
Here is the brief interview Marty provided. If I were marty I wouldn’t change much other than possibly add more sites, and more information on the operation of site and what bid manager stood for on the Help page. Bit more on about us page will not hurt either.
