Dave and Annie have done a nice job setting up LinksQuitters. It has a nice green touch to it, which does not hurt your eyes either . I liked both browsing , and enjoyed few games on sites which are listed on LinksQuitters, like the ladybug game, found at Kids Mac Games !
I did complete the ladybug game whohoo!!
LinksQuitters has some interseting sites listed, that I never heard of and I give credit to Dave and Annie for creating a resourceful directory. Most of the credit goes to Annie as you will see from Daves interview, “ my wife, Annie, is a super freak editor who loves to edit all day long,” . So, that explains it all.A super freak editor can do wonders to a directory for sure. This statement made me explore the directory to see if there is any mention of the same, that is some links get added manually, otherwise it gives wrong impression to submitters that all sites were submitted by individual webmasters, after paying the review fee. Which I personally feel is not right. But than again, directories like Yahoo also add sites manually they find worth listing. However, they do mention on site that webmasters can submit their sites for review and if they are worth listing, they will get reviewed and listed. So, what I would to suggest Dave is to actually mention that LinksQuitters adds sites manually from time to time, because like Annie said, “I believe a directory needs manual additions to keep it growing evenly, otherwise it will be heavy with directory and travel submissions and empty in arts and education” -Quoted from Annie via a 1-on-1 on YIM. That, I understand, but would like to see something like that mentioned, not only at LinksQuitters, but on all paid web directories, especially those adding links manually from time to time.
Even though I did not find lots of issues with LinksQuitters, I would just like to point out few things I noticed that were out of order, one of which Annie fixed ASAP. What happened was that LinksQuitters, moved few categories around, and forgot to rebuild the directory cache, which caused few links to appear in wrong categories, thus if you clicked on details for a listed site, when clicked on its category link displayed it would just redirect to home page instead or redirecting to actual category it was listed in. One more thing that I noticed and should be taken care of is that if you type some text in the search field, after the results are displayed the search term you typed gets moved to the top, basically it looses alignment.Just one more thing before I conclude the review, there is this particular link which I personally think should not be listed on a directory which lists quality sites. Its Pretty Sled Dogs, I think the site it links to is not resourceful at all. It’s basically a site about buying 1 DVD. Why its listed I cannot understand, since the owners are big huskies lovers, must have found it a great find, hence listed it is the theroy I could come up with !! But overall other listings that I was able to browse in my allocated time of 2-4 hrs for writing reviews for directories were mostly helpful.
With that I would like to conclude and would give Links Quitters Directory 9.5/10!! Please enjoy what Dave said in his interview. Feel free to drop him lots of emails!!! Because everyone loves fan mails!!
What is your name and age and where are you from?
My name is Dave Post, I am from Michigan and am old enough to know better!
When was your directory created? And might we dare ask what made you jump into the directory business? Did any directory motivated or inspired you to start your own directory?
LinksQuitters was created in November of 2006 with the help of my wife Annie which everyone knows. I started the directory as a hobby because DMOZ had crashed and we NEEDED to edit. LinksQuitters Directory has since grown into an obsession for us that takes up a lot of both of our time to keep the directory growing into a well rounded resource. I talked with quite a few directory owners before jumping into it and got a lot a positive feedback and guidance. With all the help that was available to me, I thought I would make a go of it.
Do you remember the first Pagerank your directory received, if so would you mind sharing it with us. What are your plans for the next one?
LinksQuitters Directory started at PR0 and now is PR5 due to all the help from the people mentioned above.
Is it prepared properly to face the next PR update?
PR and a PR update isn’t that important to us. We are mainly focused on keeping LinksQuitters Directory a valuable resource for users and webmasters alike. So to answer the question, not really sure and don’t really care.
What about the template? Is it custom made or using readily available free templates? And do you have any plans in near future for changing the design?
We started out and right now are still using using Rob’s (An0n @ DP) Singe template but have since purchased multiple customized templates. Once we make a decision on which one to use, we will update it with the customized template and make an announcement.
What modifications or some say mods do you have installed?
Rob’s (An0n @DP) Deep Link mod, one of the best investments we have made in our directory. We also have a Stats MOD, a Contact US page and an Suggest Category link that I installed myself on top of Rob’s template.
Do you believe that a directory should have a blog?
Believe? No, I think it’s up to the individual directory owner as to whether or not they want to have a Blog on their directory. To me a Blog is a separate thing that has nothing to do with the quality of a directory but it can co-exist as a complimentary component of a directory.
Do you have a link building strategy you want to share?
If by link building you mean getting links to our directory, no, no strategy. When we find a good quality directory to submit our directory to, we do just that.
Is there a promotion strategy you are after?
No
How is traffic? Do you have any specific goals set?
I think our traffic is fine but as everyone says, more traffic is always good. I have no goals set for traffic but we are still new to this and our traffic is growing day by day.
Where is your traffic coming from?
60.80% Search Engines 27.41% Referring Sites 11.73% Direct Traffic Again, I see our traffic growing day by day and I guess the goal is to get more and more.
What about SEO and SERPs? Do you believe in that and as a directory owner do you believe it’s a requirement for any directory?
I don’t really know how to answer that question, it’s not even close to our main focus.
What keywords are you targeting, if any?
We aren’t targeting any specific keywords but looking at our traffic stats, the keywords that are getting traffic to our site are quite satisfactory.
Are there any other strong features you think must be pointed out?
I think the strongest feature of our directory is the basics. A good user friendly GUI and content of high quality and again, a well rounded resource for users and webmasters.
Would you like to share with everyone the stats of your directory? For example, active links, number of categories, and inactive links?
That information is available right on our home page but for purposes of the interview, here is where we are now: Total Main Categories - 15 Total Sub Categories - 398 Quality sites listed - 1605 Crappy sites listed - 1 Today’s submissions - 6 Today’s listed sites - 14 We also have only 3 inactive links right now and have just finished running link validation and have repaired, replaced or deleted all non working links (there were only 12 because we do this often).
How many editors does your directory have? If none, do you plan on hiring editors at later stages of your directory development?
One, my wife, Annie, is a super freak editor who loves to edit all day long, so this directory will continue to grow regardless of anything happening in the Internet world, including fluctuations in search engines, page rank and serps.
How can users get in touch with you?
Any user can get a hold of me by using either the Contact us page or they can use my personal email address which is davewpost@gmail.com.
