Thanks Adrian, for your time and replying to our questions in such details. Let me first quickly put my own personal opinions about Directory Share. First impression was that directory share could use some eye catching design, the current design did not appeal to me much, but in terms of functionality and user friendliness it’s great. The site loads pretty quick, unlike few directories I have seen, which take ages to open. One of the intriguing features we noticed is that this directory, on the main page shows the sites which send traffic/visitors to Directory Share. We hope we can contribute to the stats too :).
Browsing the directory I located quite few interesting links, like the free phpld mods, that directory share has released. Really liked the “Category News Feed” mod, will try it on one of my directories sometime. Also stumbled upon the free phpld template link, but only a blank page greeted me, I was eager to see some of the design work done by Directory Share. I am sure with time Adrian will release some cool looking templates. This project is a re-launch of 2005 project. And we wish Adrian and Kelvin best of luck and are hoping to see some more cool mods and templates releases. Overall I would rate directory share as 9/10, as I love to see good designs, and to be frank directory share could use one but like Adrian said they are tweaking the design still and will be adding more colors to it soon, looking forward to the same. Once again thanks Adrian for giving us the opportunity to review your directory. Please read what Adrian had to say:
What is your name and age and where are you from?
My name is Adrian Portsmouth and I am 27 years old. Where I come from is a good question, I was born in England, raised in Germany and now live in Brazil.
When was your directory created? And might we dare ask what made you jump into the directory business? Did any directory motivated or inspired you to start your own directory?
Directory Share was originally launched in 2005 as part of a network of eleven directories. I had become so frustrated with the horrendous time it took to get listed in DMOZ that I decided to start my own directory network to promote my clients web sites. Unfortunately demand was just too high at the time for me to manage all eleven as free directories and thus Directory Share was closed and a number of the directories were converted to paid. The project was then re-launched in February 2007 with the help of my father and business partner Kelvin.
Do you remember the first Pagerank your directory received, if so would you mind sharing it with us. What are your plans for the next one?
The first ever Pagerank it achieved was a 5, but this obviously fell when the site was closed. Since it was re-launched, Directory Share has maintained a Pagerank of 3.
Is it prepared properly to face the next PR update?
Hang on, I’ll just call Google and let you know… or in other words, I hope so. I have invested a lot of time and money in the project so I am expecting some movement, but the way Google has been playing with the PR lately it is hard to predict. (I am referring to the reduction in PR of Alive Directory during the last update, which no one expected).
What about the template? Is it custom made or using readily available free templates? And do you have any plans in near future for changing the design?
The template is custom made by myself with the logo being designed by a member from Digital Point forums. We have no plans for a redesign at this time, however we are always adding and tweaking the current design. For example we have just had some new icons developed for the homepage to add a bit of color, so they will be going on line in the next week or so.
What modifications or some say mods do you have installed?
At the moment we only have one third party mod installed which is the Pagerank Updating tool from Directory Spy. All other modifications to the directory have been carried out by myself, some of which are also available for downloading from our Free phpLD Mods section.
Do you believe that a directory should have a blog?
I don’t believe that it is a requirement or a necessity. It would really depend on what the directory’s marketing plan is. We do not have any plans to add one to Directory Share.
Do you have a link building strategy you want to share?
I don’t have a specific strategy I simply keep a look out for good deals on quality sites and if they are within the monthly marketing budget then I will often purchase. I do have a preference of looking for high traffic sites as these tend to offer a better return on investment.
How is traffic? Do you have any specific goals set?
Traffic is I would say at an average level, we currently get around 150 – 250 unique visits per day. Since the re-launch our Alexa ranking has consistently improved with every update and currently stands at 80,571. Obviously we are never satisfied and are constantly looking for ways to generate new traffic to the directory.
Where is your traffic coming from?
60 percent of our traffic comes from referring web sites such as forums and blogs, 25 percent comes directly from search engines and the remaining 15 percent comes from direct visits from bookmarks, etc.
What about SEO and SERPs? Do you believe in that and as a directory owner do you believe it’s a requirement for any directory?
Yes I believe that SEO is a very important part of running a web directory and it is something that we have invested heavily in since re-launching the web site.
What keywords are you targeting, if any?
Aside from the primary keywords such as ‘web directory’, ‘general directory’, etc. We are focusing much of our efforts on long tail keywords which will generate traffic directly to our listing pages and subsequently to our customers web sites.
Do you have any kind of stats regarding the traffic your directory sends to the listed sites? Other than our ‘Most Visited Websites’ page, no we do not have any stats available at this time. Are there any other strong features you think must be pointed out?
Did I mention our Free phpLD Mods and our soon to come Free phpLD Templates? 🙂
Would you like to share with everyone the stats of your directory? For example, active links, number of categories, and inactive links?
All of the stats are available on the directory directly above the footer, but at the time of writing we have 519 categories, 51 featured web sites, 84 regular web sites and 8 articles.
How many editors does your directory have? If none, do you plan on hiring editors at later stages of your directory development?
The directory has one full time editor, my business partner Kelvin. Whilst I am left to carry out all of the development and promotion work for the directory.
How can users get in touch with you?
Users can contact me via my Digital Point profile SilkySmooth, we don’t have a contact form on the directory at the moment as we are working on a new mod for communications.
